Bryson is 6!

Just realized concession is spelled wrong, HA!

Bryson Scott Hughes turned six on October 2nd.  Bryson adds so much to our family.
He is still extra caring and compassionate.
Bryson is our family clown.  He feels the need to make everything a joke or funny.  We are working on when it is appropriate to be funny and when it is time to be serious.
Bryson is just over four feet tall and weighs about 50 lbs.
He really enjoys playing in the yard with his brothers and riding his scooter.  Just the other day he learned to ride a bike without training wheels.
The Wii is also a favorite past time.
School is going well and he really likes his teacher, he is learning to love learning and is beginning to catch on better to reading.
Bryson is not a very picky eater.  He really likes taco soup, but often picks things to eat he knows his brothers will like too.  He does not like jam or peanut butter.  He will eat them, but really would rather not.
Bryson is still into science.  He likes volcanoes the best, mostly because they explode.
Bryson is such a great little kid, and we love him so much!

His birthday was full of fun!  He had lunch with Dad and then we went to The Red Barn for our evening activity; hayrides, pumpkin patch, and ice cream included.
His party was a blast.  We did a drive in movie complete with a concession stand.  Jaron and Bryson ate a little too much candy and ended up not feeling too great, but that aside is was a big hit.
With all the birthday hoopla I think they come away feeling loved and appreciated and that is why we always make such a big deal about it.

Eldon Turns 4

Eldon turned 4 on Sep. 19th.  Our family sure is blessed for having this little guy in it.  Eldon loves to give mom hugs and kisses.  He loves for mom to lay with him when he is falling asleep.  This doesn’t happen much, but it sure is a treat when it does.
Eldon tries his best to keep up with his brother and I think as time passes he will be bigger in size than them.
This year in primary he has come out of his shell and decided that participating and giving people a smile really is fun.
Eldon likes all colors.
He loves pizza, hot dogs, spaghetti and breakfast foods. He also loves milk and dairy.
He loves to play outside and ride is scooter.
Playing with action figures is also a big past time of his.
He likes to watch movies and sports. He usually picks KungFu Panda.
His favorite songs are “We are a Happy Family,” “My Heavenly Father Loves Me,” and “Little Seeds.”
Eldon is a really good dancer.  He likes to shake his bootie whenever acceptable.
He is an awesome big brother and loves to help Landon do his chores.  He often also tries to pawn his chores off on Landon.  In his most sweet voice he tells Landon to come unload the dishwasher or get the garbage, such a sneaky kid.
He likes to learn, and is still working on identifying his letters and counting to 20.

Family Reunions!

The Hughes reunion on July 13th was fun.  We enjoyed spending time getting to know our extended family members and catching up.

The Gray, Hughes, Eves reunion went really well and we all came home exhausted. I asked the boys what there favorite parts were.  Jaron liked watching Tarzan 2.  Bryson liked the plays the best.  His favorite part was when Stacie showed Papa the spider and he fell down.  He was laughing as he recounted the event.  He found the pink unicorn particularly humorous also. Eldon liked the sucker hunt the best.  I am grateful for the relationships that were formed between the kids and those there.  It was precious to see Landon run to Papa when he entered the room, to see him demand Gram to sit by him or to see him just walk up and grab Grandpa Gray’s hand.  Creating bonds that will last means so much to us.

Landon is 2

Landon Wenzel Hughes is 2!  For the first time I do not have a baby when one of my children turned 2.  The reason I say this I think it has played a key role in him having a terrible case of the terrible two’s.  Our baby who is very much not a baby is still treated like a baby in many ways.  He must have his way!  If he doesn’t get his way then there is some major temper tantrums ahead.  He is very fond of hitting, biting, and the latest . . . . pulling hair. Poor Eldon often takes the blunt of the abuse. With his childish flaws stated there is still much to be said for his cuteness and strengths.
Landon is very friendly usually.  He loves his Dad and uncles the most.  He loves to veg. on the couch with his Dad or Uncle Tyson and Aunt Karlee.
Landon likes to do puzzles, dance, and sing.  He often combines dancing and singing.  I love to hear him try to sing.  His favorite songs are “I Am a Child of God,” “Twinkly, Twinkly Little Star,”  “The Itsy Bitsy Spider,” and “We Are a Happy Family.”
Landon is very skilled in climbing.  He uses his little mind to figure out how to get to what he wants then starts scooting chairs, boxes, and anything else he needs to reach his goal. Landon has successfully climbed over the side of his crib, but then doesn’t know what to do so he climbs back in. A big boy bed might be in the close future for him.
Landon loves sugar.  He will take candy over almost anything.  He doesn’t like meat and uncooked vegetables. He does eat both of those sometimes and likes cucumbers. He loves dairy but because he has a dairy intolerance we have to limit how much dairy he can have.  He loves most pasta dishes and doesn’t mind a little spice or sour flavor.  He will drink soda, but doesn’t like it too much.  The carbonation is too much for him. Favorite foods would include: Grapes, dried cherries, raisins, candy, pasta, cheese, and milk.
Landon likes sports.  He likes to watch, which is always accompanied by loud cheering, or play them.  He is very good at sports for his age.  He can catch, throw, and kick a ball fairly well.  This is good because he has a lot of energy that he needs to run off.  He very rarely walks anywhere.  He runs most of the time. Because of his activity level he doesn’t usually sit and watch anything for more than 30 min.
Landon likes animals a lot.  When he sees one he gets very excited and makes sure that we see them too.
Landon weighs 28 pounds and is 2’11” inches tall, which puts in him the 70% for weight and 60% for height. In addition to his dairy intolerance Landon also has eczema.  His speech is just were it should be. All in all he is a healthy guy.
Landon is such a cute little thing and we all love him to pieces.  We can’t imagine our family without this little guy to keep us on our toes and give us kisses.

Marriage Advice

June 19, 2013
I know this might be odd, but I have been thinking about what advice I would give my children when they get married. So here is what I have come up with so far.

Never forget God is part of your marriage.  It is like a triangle with him at the top and you and your spouse in the bottom two corners.  Communication must exist in all directions. The closer you are to God the more empowered you will be in your relationships. Successful couples are united in truth and gospel living while at the same time patient with imperfections.  Each marriage is so different.  Only Heavenly Father has the love and understanding you will need. Only He can help you see these things clearly and inspire you to do things you might never think of yourselves to improve the quality of your marriage. To make sure he is a part of your marriage:
Attend the temple regularly together.
Study the gospel together.
Pray together.

Your spouse is your number one.  The relationship you have with them is the single most important relationship that you will EVER have. The relationship you have can last beyond the veil and into eternity.  Let this motivate you to work on the relationship. Don’t let your priorities get out of whack. Regular self evaluation is often needed to make sure they aren’t.
Be each others best friends.
Go on a date once a week.
Be your spouse’s best cheerleader.
Support them in their dreams, callings, and trials. Be there for better or for worse!
Learn to show love the way that your spouse feels loved. I recommend reading The 5 Love Languages.  It gives great insight into the way people feel loved and how to express that love to them.

Communicate. But remember not all things need to be said. Your words can hurt them, so be careful. When you are angry figure out why and make sure it isn’t for a selfish reason. Never speak out of anger. You should be loving while communicating. Contention is of the devil. Use statements that begin with “I feel” not “You.” Feelings should be expressed and how your spouse feels isn’t wrong. Sometimes they need to talk it through to figure out how to move past negative feelings.
The most effective way to communicate is found in Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which is “seek first to understand, and then be understood.”  People are so much more willing to listen when they know that they have been heard.
Realize that differences are differences.  Differences don’t mean that one is right and the other is wrong. You just see things differently. Accept that there might be more than one answer. I know you will think your way is better, and it might be, but is it really eternally important? If it is don’t give up your beliefs, but you can’t force your spouse to see it your way. Ask yourself, “Do I want to be married or do I want to be right?” Respect your spouse’s opinion.
Uncle Tyson has shared with me something that his stake president counseled him and Karlee when they got married and it was, “If you argue, ALWAYS be the first one to apologize.”

Never withhold love. Sometimes you will feel like they don’t deserve it, but they always do.  Everyone deserves to be loved.
No one is perfect. Learn to forgive AND forget. Loving your spouse and loving what they do are separate matters.  Learn to help each other heal.
YOU can not change your spouse. Remember only Christ is perfect. Most people see their flaws, they don’t need a reminder. You should stick to working on your own dirty window. With that said you can be a source of encouragement to your spouse on their journey to change for the better. Often we marry our opposites.  Your spouse will have strengths and weaknesses that you do not. Through open and loving communications you can work together to change to be better people.

One day you will come off cloud nine and you need to realize the following things. Love is an action word. Love and charity are the same. Love is a choice. Falling out of love is a choice.  Love your spouse like God loves them. Nothing is wrong with your marriage when you no longer are infatuated with each other. This is an important stage of marriage but through time it will turn into something more deep and meaningful.  There is great joy to be had in marriage and it grows as time passes.

Marriage is hard, but anything worth having is hard.  Marriage is also one of the most wonderful gifts God has given us. “Marriage is a gift from God; a happy marriage is our gift to him.” Never give up on your happily ever after.

No Training Wheels

So I finally took Jaron's training wheels off and he is a pro.  It took one time of me helping him for him to have it down.  Kind of late I know, but it was such a good experience since he was fully ready.

Over the Hills and Through the Woods

The first week of June Don has off so we went to visit my parents in Redding California.  The boys had a blast spending time with their grandparents. Our events included a visit to Turtle Bay, walking Sundial Bridge, swimming in Whiskytown Lake, a picnic, a fabulous park, visiting the institute, eating out, and the highlight for them all swimming!
It was really wonderful to see them and see the area in which they are serving.

Where are the Lego men?

Landon. Need I say more?  Death to the legos!

Nothing is as Constant as Change

That's right, nothing is as constant as change.  This is something that I remember President Monson saying a few conferences ago and I have to be honest, change is hard.  But then life is meant to be hard.  We are here to grow and become something that God intended for us to become.  And that something is often not what we had in mind.  And a lot of the times becoming something great hurts a little.  We don’t see in ourselves what he sees.  He sees such great potential and if we allow him to, he will help us achieve our potential.
In May we got to attend Brittnee’s and Carlie’s graduations.  As I saw them moving on in their lives I got to see what Heavenly Father must see. They are both such wonderful women!! Those girls both will/can do amazing things with their lives. It made me remember that life is short and sweet so to make the most if it.  Don’t waste time wishing you were somewhere else, somebody else, dreaming of a different life; BECOME what you know you should be.  If you don’t know what you should be . . . ask.
